Which Outdoor Combination Padlock Can Also Open With a Key?

Which Outdoor Combination Padlock Can Also Open With a Key?

It’s a common request: a padlock that works outdoors, can be opened with a combination, and also has a key override. Currently, most combination padlocks that include a key override are designed for indoor use only. Their internal mechanisms are not sealed against rain, grit or salt, so outdoors they tend to seize or corrode.

However, there is a simple setup that achieves the same result without sacrificing weather resistance.

Use a Keyed Padlock + Outdoor Lockbox

Instead of looking for a single padlock that does both jobs, pair:

  • A weatherproof keyed padlock

  • With a weatherproof combination lockbox to store the key

This means everyday key holders use their key as normal. When someone else needs temporary access, you simply give them the lockbox code so they can retrieve the key.

Why This Works Better Outdoors

Outdoor padlocks need to cope with:

  • Rain

  • Grit and dirt

  • Salt air near the coast

  • Temperature changes

Combination padlocks with key override mechanisms generally are not sealed well enough for this environment. A high-quality weatherproof keyed padlock plus a lockbox avoids corrosion issues while still allowing shared access.

Increase Security With a Restricted Key System

If you are sharing the key via a lockbox, consider using a restricted key padlock.
Restricted keys:

  • Cannot be copied at standard key cutters

  • Require authorised permission to duplicate

  • Help maintain control over access long-term

This setup works particularly well for:

  • Holiday rental properties

  • Sports clubs and playing fields

  • Allotments and shared spaces

  • Workyards and fenced compounds
