High Security Padlocks

Shop our range of high security padlocks from trusted security brands, such as ABUS Squire, Master Lock and CISA. Insurance companies will often ask for a number of different requirements but if in doubt then we advise you to use a European standard known as CEN that ranges from grades 1-6.

High Security Padlocks FAQs

Insurance requirements vary, but most policies will specify one or more of the following:

- A 5-lever padlock
- A closed shackle padlock
- A CEN Grade 3 or higher
- A Sold Secure-rated padlock

If you’re unsure, we recommend choosing a CEN-rated padlock of 3 or above, ideally a closed shackle design for maximum resistance to cutting attacks. Our team can advise which models best match your insurer’s wording.

CEN stands for Central European Norm, the European testing standard for padlock strength and attack resistance.
Grades range from CEN 1 (low security) to CEN 6 (maximum security).
For most commercial, industrial, or insurance-rated applications, we recommend CEN 3–5. Each level represents rigorous mechanical and environmental testing to measure cutting, drilling, and pulling strength.

CEN and BSEN are effectively identical standards. CEN, being European, and BSEN, the British version, both have a grading scale from 1 to 6.

Sold Secure uses Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, originally developed for bikes and motorcycles.

Here’s a simple comparison guide:

- Sheds, toolboxes, bicycles: CEN/BSEN 3 or Sold Secure Bronze
- Garages, driveway gates, expensive bikes: CEN/BSEN 4 or Sold Secure Silver
- Warehouses, shutters, containers, motorcycles: CEN/BSEN 5 or Sold Secure Gold
-Military, firearms, high-value storage: CEN/BSEN 6

Yes, significantly.
A closed shackle padlock shields most of the shackle within the lock body, reducing the exposed metal available for bolt cutters or saws.
All major testing systems, including CEN and Sold Secure, recognise the added strength of closed shackle or disc-style padlocks.
If your application allows, always choose a closed shackle model for maximum protection.

Many shipping containers, lock boxes, and warehouse doors include welded lock boxes for added protection.
In these cases, use a high security padlock with a removable or concealed shackle, such as the ABUS Granit series. These padlocks fit securely inside container housings and offer exceptional resistance to cutting and leverage attacks.

Not all, but many are.
Some high security models are made from hardened steel, which provides strength but can corrode over time if left exposed.
For outdoor or coastal use, select a weatherproof high security padlock with a stainless steel or brass body and a sealed locking mechanism.
We label all weather-rated models clearly on our website.
