Cables & Chains

Shop our range of cables and chains suitable for padlocks. We recommend two things when it comes to using a chain: ideally, choose a closed shackle padlock and use a security chain, as they are much stronger.

Cables & Chains FAQs

Always choose a hardened security chain with welded links and corrosion-resistant coating. Hardened steel offers maximum resistance to sawing and bolt cutting, and the end links should be large enough to connect without exposing both to attack. ABUS chains are particularly reliable due to their through-hardening process, which gives consistent strength along the entire length.

Most good security chains have one oversized end link. The smaller link passes through it, and only the larger one is secured by the padlock. This ensures a closed shackle or discus lock can still be used while maintaining high protection. Avoid cutting both ends of a chain to equal length, that removes the large end link and reduces usability.

Yes. The overall system is only as strong as its weakest point. Using a hardened chain with a lightweight padlock is ineffective. As a rule, match a chain’s thickness and grade to a padlock with equivalent shackle strength. For additional resistance, use a closed shackle padlock - it protects the shackle while maintaining high tensile performance.
