Lever Padlocks

Some insurance companies will require you to use a padlocks with 5 levers or more so here are a few options that will satisfy those.

Lever padlocks however are a little dated and if you go to an antique fair you'll see a lot of the old locks are using levers. In fact some of the padlocks on this page have changed very little from when they were first designed over 40 years ago. That said, what was strong then is still strong today and they remain very popular as a high security padlock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lever Padlocks FAQs

Yes. Although the lever mechanism design is decades old, it remains mechanically robust and very hard to force open. Lever padlocks use multiple internal levers that must all align perfectly before the bolt can retract, making them resistant to basic picking and manipulation. Many models on the market today are largely unchanged from designs developed over 40 years ago, demonstrating their enduring reliability.

It depends on the insurance requirement. If your insurer specifies the use of a “5 lever padlock or higher”, then yes, these models meet that request. However, if your insurer asks for a CEN or BSEN grade, then most lever padlocks will not qualify.

This is because CEN and BSEN tests measure modern performance standards such as key variation counts, which lever mechanisms cannot always achieve due to their traditional design.
Despite this, they remain high-security locks in practical terms, offering proven resistance to physical attack.

There are two main reasons:

- Production scale: Lever padlocks are now produced in smaller numbers, increasing manufacturing costs.
- Build quality: The models still made today come from top-tier brands such as Squire, Union, and Ingersoll, using heavy-duty materials and precise engineering.

This combination of quality craftsmanship and limited production makes them premium products despite their traditional design.

Lever padlocks are ideal for:
- Gates and outbuildings requiring mechanical strength
- Industrial sites or workshops preferring key-based access
- Historic or restoration settings where a traditional design is preferred
- Insurance-specified 5 lever requirements

Their solid construction and key-based reliability make them a good choice where durability is more important than modern mechanism variety.

Cylinder padlocks use pin tumbler mechanisms, which allow for more key variations and compatibility with master key systems. Lever padlocks rely on flat keys and lever stacks, offering mechanical strength but fewer unique key combinations. Both systems have their place. Lever padlocks excel in rugged reliability, while cylinder padlocks offer greater versatility and expandability.
