What is the Best Hasp and Staple Fitting for my Padlock?

What is the Best Hasp and Staple Fitting for my Padlock?

Choosing the correct hasp and staple fitting depends on the padlock you are using and where the fitting will be installed. The hasp and staple need to be secure, compatible with your padlock shackle size, and suitable for the surface you are fixing it to.

Consider the Surface and Environment

Think about what you are fixing the fitting to and whether it will be used indoors or outdoors. Most hasp and staples are designed for flush-fitting doors, but some fittings, such as the Abus 110/195, include an additional hinge to secure around a 90-degree corner. If the fitting will be outside, make sure both the padlock and hasp are corrosion-resistant.

Check the Shackle Diameter and Clearance

Make sure the padlock shackle diameter fits through the staple loop. Also check the inner clearance of your padlock, particularly if it is a closed shackle design with less space. The fitting needs to allow the padlock to close properly without excessive movement, as too much movement can create leverage points.

Horizontal vs Vertical Staples

Most fittings use a horizontal staple, but a vertical staple can be more suitable when using closed shackle padlocks. The vertical configuration can allow the lock to sit more securely and reduce exposed shackle. The Abus 110/195 is an example of this type of fitting and can take shackles up to around 12mm.

Measuring the Fitting

Every hasp and staple product on our site includes a specification sheet showing the maximum shackle diameter it can take. Compare these measurements with your padlock’s inner shackle clearance. For example, fittings such as the Abus 140/120 are designed to work closely with Diskus padlocks, leaving very little shackle exposed.

Alternatives to Standard Hasp and Staple Sets

Other secure options include pad bars, door bolts, and padlock brackets. For keyless operation, the Squire Combi4 is a door bolt with a built-in combination lock and can be secured in both open and closed positions. This can be useful on sheds, storage boxes, and gates where shared access is required.
