How to Choose the Right Padlock for a Shipping Container
How to Choose the Right Padlock for a Shipping Container
Most containers have a lockbox. That changes your options.
Most modern shipping containers come with a steel lockbox welded over the locking point. The lockbox shields the padlock body and shackle from direct attack. It's a good system, but it limits which padlocks will physically fit.
A standard curved-shackle padlock won't work in most lockboxes. The space is too narrow and the shackle shape doesn't line up with the locking points. You need either a straight-shackle (shutter) padlock or a removable-shackle padlock that can be dismantled, threaded through the lockbox, and reassembled inside it.
Key Factors to Consider
When selecting a padlock for a shipping container, consider the following:
- Security level: Match the lock strength to the value of the goods stored.
- Body and shackle material: Hardened or boron steel is preferred for attack resistance.
- Anti-drill and anti-pick mechanisms: Essential for preventing tampering.
- Bolt-cutter resistance: The shackle should be thick and protected.
- Lockbox compatibility: Many containers include a steel lockbox that shields the padlock from attack.
- Ease of operation: The lock must be simple to fit and unlock, even in confined spaces.
Best Padlock Types for Shipping Containers
1. Straight-shackle padlocks
A straight-shackle padlock slides directly between two fixed eyelets inside the lockbox. The shackle sits flat, leaving almost nothing exposed for a bolt cutter to grip. This is the simplest and most common solution for container security.
The ABUS 92/65 and 92/80 are the two we sell most for this job. Hardened steel body, chrome-plated straight shackle, CEN Grade 3 insurance rated. Both have the key entry and shackle on the same side of the body, which matters more than you'd think. Some shutter padlocks put the key on one side and the shackle on the other, which makes them awkward or impossible to operate once they're seated inside a tight lockbox.
The 92/80 is the better choice if you need a heavier shackle and can confirm your lockbox will take the extra width. The 92/65 fits most standard container lockboxes without issue.
Both are available keyed alike if you're running multiple containers and want one key for the lot. We record the key number against your account, so you can reorder matching padlocks or replacement keys at any point.
For a lighter-weight option on lower-risk containers or indoor storage, the ABUS 82 Series brass shutter padlock uses the same straight-shackle format in a corrosion-resistant brass body. It won't match the 92 Series for brute-force resistance, but it holds up well in damp or coastal environments where steel padlocks can seize.
Recommended Example:
The Abus Granit range offers insurance-approved removable shackle padlocks designed for container use, with options for longer shackles to suit different lockbox layouts.
2. Removable-shackle padlocks
Some lockbox designs have a deeper recess or an awkward internal layout where a straight-shackle padlock won't reach. In these cases, a removable-shackle padlock is the answer.
The process is straightforward. You unlock the padlock, unscrew a grub screw to detach the shackle from the body, feed the shackle through the securing points inside the lockbox by hand, then reattach the body and lock it. Once assembled, the padlock sits fully enclosed inside the lockbox with zero shackle exposure.
The ABUS 37RK Granit Series is the go-to here. CEN Grade 4, hardened alloy steel body and shackle, ABUS Plus disc cylinder with over 250,000 key variations. The shackle converts to fully removable, and the lock is key-retaining, so it can't be left open by accident. Available in 60mm and 80mm.
If you need a closed-shackle version with even higher attack resistance, the ABUS 37RK Closed Shackle Granit Plus adds a protective guard around the shackle and is rated CEN 5. This is the padlock we'd recommend for high-value goods, long-term storage, or containers sitting in isolated locations.
Both Granit models can be supplied keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed. If you already run an ABUS keyed-alike system across other locks on your site, we can match the container padlocks to your existing key profile.
3. No lockbox? Use a purpose-bult container lock
If your container doesn't have a lockbox, bolting on a dedicated container lock system is the single biggest security improvement you can make. A padlock alone, no matter how strong, is vulnerable when the shackle is fully exposed on the outside of a door.
The ABUS 215/100 ConHasp Granit solves this. It's a hardened steel housing that bolts over the container's locking bars, with an integrated locking point for a compatible padlock. When paired with the ABUS Granit 37RK/70 or the ABUS Rock 83/60HB100-5, the system is tested to VdS Guideline 3503 Class B. That's one of the highest recognised container security standards in Europe.
The Rock 83 variant accepts a Euro half cylinder, so you can integrate it into an existing master key or restricted keyway system. If you already use restricted keyway padlocks(s) across your site, this keeps everything on one key profile.
What about combination padlocks?
We get asked this regularly. Combination padlocks are convenient when multiple people need access without copying keys, but they're not suited to container security. The mechanisms are weaker than keyed equivalents at the same price point, and a determined attacker can manipulate most combination cylinders faster than they can cut a hardened shackle.
If shared access is the problem you're trying to solve, a keyed alike set is a better answer. Everyone who needs access carries the same key. Nobody needs to remember a code, and the lock itself can be a proper CEN-rated steel padlock rather than a compromise.
Buying for multiple containers?
Construction firms, logistics operators and self-storage businesses often need to secure 10, 50 or 200+ containers at once. We handle this regularly.
Keyed alike sets mean your drivers, site managers or security team carry one key for every container. We build the sets in-house, record the key number, and can add matching padlocks to your order at any point in the future. If you need different access levels across your fleet, master keyed systems give a site manager override access while individual operators keep their own keys.
