Which Range of High Security Padlocks Cover Different Needs?
When you have a site that requires high security padlocks in different sizes, or with different key access requirements, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Selecting a single padlock range that covers multiple formats is often the easiest and most secure approach. The Abus 83 Series is designed exactly for this. It offers consistent build quality across the range, while allowing you to choose the correct size, key system, and shackle style for each application.
The Highest Security Option: Abus Rock 83CS/80 (CEN 6)
For critical access areas that require maximum resistance to attack, the Abus Rock 83CS/80 is a strong choice. This is a large, heavy-duty padlock with a 15mm hardened steel shackle that fully removes from the body when unlocked. This makes it easier to fit through awkward or enclosed hasp and staple arrangements.
The closed shackle body protects most of the shackle from bolt croppers or cutting tools. Even if one cut is made, the lock will not open — the design requires two complete cuts to release the shackle. This padlock is keyed on a restricted keyway system, meaning keys cannot be duplicated at a standard locksmith. Extra keys are only supplied through authorised channels and require the code card, helping maintain full key control on-site.
The 83CS/80 can be supplied keyed alike for shared access, or key differ if you need individuals or departments to have controlled access.
Smaller but Still Strong: Abus Rock 83CS/55 and 83/55 (CEN 4)
For areas requiring strong security but where a large padlock is not required, the 83/55 and 83CS/55 are ideal. These are often referred to as the “Baby Rock.” They are CEN 4 insurance rated and come in both open shackle and closed shackle versions. With an 11mm shackle and a solid hardened steel body, they still offer strong resistance to force attacks.
These models are available keyed alike or key differ. However, they operate on a different keyway to the larger Rock 83CS/80, so they cannot be matched to the same key system as the CEN 6 model.
Optional Key Control Feature: Key It Twice
A unique feature available on the 83/55 and 83CS/55 models is the Key It Twice option. This provides a second set of keys that automatically disable the first set when used for the first time. This can be extremely useful if keys are lost, stolen, or access permissions change. It allows you to reset security instantly without replacing the padlocks.
