Your Guide to High Security CEN 5/6 Rated Padlocks
Squire’s Stronghold range sits at the top end of their high-security padlock lineup, with models achieving CEN 5 and CEN 6 ratings. These ratings make them suitable for applications where insurers specify a minimum grade of padlock, particularly for high-risk areas or valuable equipment.
The Stronghold range includes both open shackle and closed shackle versions, with the option to choose either keyed differ (each lock different) or keyed alike (one key opens multiple locks). This flexibility allows you to tailor the padlock setup to your site layout and operational needs.
Squire Stronghold SS65 (Open Shackle)
The Squire SS65 features a 13mm hardened boron alloy shackle and a hardened steel lock body. Designed to resist physical attacks, it holds a CEN 5 high-security rating, making it suitable for securing gates, stores, compounds and high-value equipment.
Although not classed as a marine-grade lock, it does feature an electrophoretic coating and has undergone extensive salt spray testing. This means it offers strong performance outdoors in typical UK weather conditions, especially inland environments.
Squire Stronghold SS65CS (Closed Shackle)
Where fittings allow, upgrading to the closed shackle version (SS65CS) increases security further by shielding the shackle from cutters and tools. This model holds the highest rating of CEN 6, making it suitable for high-risk sites or where insurers require “insurance-approved” hardware at the top tier.
Both Stronghold models use the same internal build quality and locking mechanism; the additional shackle protection is what elevates the SS65CS to the higher grade.
Insurance Considerations
Many insurers specify CEN 4+, or refer to “high security” or “closed shackle” padlocks. The Stronghold range typically meets or exceeds these requirements. However, always verify your policy wording and ensure the padlock grade and installation are documented.
If uncertain, ask your insurer to confirm requirements in writing — then match the specification and keep serial numbers, purchase receipts and photos on file.
