Need Extra Keys — How Do I Pick the Right Ones?

Need Extra Keys — How Do I Pick the Right Ones?

Ordering extra keys is straightforward when you know what to look for. The key is to confirm the padlock’s keying type and the key system used. Below is a practical guide that explains the common key types, how to identify them, what to include when you order, and best practice for restricted or master-key systems.

Check whether the padlock is keyed alike or keyed differ

Padlocks come either keyed alike (KA) or keyed differ (KD).

  • Keyed alike (KA) means several padlocks share the same key. Order extra keys for the same code and every lock in that group will open with each key.

  • Keyed differ (KD) means each padlock has its own unique key. If you need extra keys for a KD lock, you must specify the exact code or have the lock present for key cutting.

You can usually tell from the product code if a model is KA. Look for “KA” in the product code (for example “65/40 KA”).

Identify the key system (standard, Plus, restricted)

Manufacturers use different cylinder/key systems. Common labels you will see include: standard, Plus, RES (restricted), SZP or similar. These affect availability and duplication controls.

  • Standard: easiest to duplicate; keys are common blanks.

  • Plus / Advanced: higher security profile and more complex blanks.

  • Restricted / SZP / Patented: higher security and controlled duplication. Extras are only supplied by authorised channels and may require proof of purchase or documented authorisation.

Check the product code and product page for the key system. If the code includes “Plus”, “RES”, “SZP” or “Restricted”, order the corresponding key type.

How to order extra keys (step-by-step)

  1. Confirm the padlock model and product code from your order.

  2. Check whether it is KA or KD. If KA, note the KA code. If KD, note the lock’s individual key number or have the lock available.

  3. Identify the key system (standard / Plus / Restricted).

  4. On the product page, use the “additional keys” option and select the matching key type and quantity.

  5. Include any key code or lock serial in the order notes to avoid errors.

  6. We will check your selection on receipt and contact you to confirm before processing if anything looks mismatched.

Restricted keys and proof of ownership

Restricted or patented key systems prevent unauthorised duplication. To order extras for restricted systems you may be required to provide:

  • Proof of purchase for the padlock(s), or

  • An authorisation form if the locks belong to a larger corporate key suite.
This protects key security and ensures only authorised duplicates are issued.

Master key suites and keyed alike groups

If your site uses a master key (MK) or grand master (GMK) suite, tell us when ordering. Extra keys for an MK suite must be cut from the correct master key code. Do not mix up KA groups with MK suites — they serve different operational needs.

Engraving, colours and labelling

Consider ordering engraved or colour-coded keys to simplify management. Simple engraving (name, zone code, tag) helps avoid key mix-ups. Coloured key caps or coloured-bodied padlocks also help visual identification on site.

What if I don’t have the code?

If you do not have a key code:

  • For keyed alike: the seller can usually trace the KA code from the order.

  • For keyed differ: you can send the lock to us for key cutting, or the lock supplier can cut to match the original key if you supply it.

Security best practice

  • Keep a secure audit of who holds extra keys.

  • Use restricted keys for high-risk sites where key control matters.

  • Store master keys or emergency override keys in a secure, access-controlled place.

  • Record serials and receipts for each padlock and key supplied.

Quick ordering checklist

  • Product code (include KA if present)

  • Key system (standard / Plus / RES / SZP / restricted)

  • Quantity of extra keys required

  • Any key code, lock serial or master-suite note

  • Engraving / colour preferences (optional)

  • Upload proof of purchase if ordering restricted keys
