How Can I Padlock a Gate Barrier With Offset Fittings?

How Can I Padlock a Gate Barrier With Offset Fittings?

When a gate barrier and its post have fittings that don’t line up, securing the gate can be more difficult than usual. In many cases, the holes don’t align or are positioned at an angle that makes it impossible to use a chain or even a long shackle padlock. The gap or offset can prevent the padlock from passing cleanly through both sides, leaving the gate unsecured.

A Simple Way to Bridge the Offset

A practical solution is to use two padlocks linked together to create the extra reach required. This creates the same effect as a short chain, without needing to drill new holes or modify fittings.

  1. Attach the first padlock through the fitting on the barrier and lock it.

  2. Take a second padlock and pass its shackle through both the gatepost fitting and the shackle of the first padlock.

  3. Lock the second padlock.
This forms a secure connection between the two parts of the gate, even if the fittings sit at an angle or are misaligned.

This method works with most gate barrier setups and allows you to choose padlocks that match your required security and weather protection.

Choosing the Right Padlocks for Outdoor Locations

If the gate is in a remote, exposed, or coastal environment, the padlocks will need to withstand harsh weather. A marine-grade padlock such as the Abus 70IB/45 is designed for outdoor use and resists corrosion from rain and salt air. It is a strong, reliable option for farms, coastal walkways, and remote access sites.

If you prefer to keep things simple with one key for multiple padlocks, selecting keyed alike padlocks is ideal. For example, choosing a pair of Abus 65/60 padlocks keyed alike means any authorised user only needs to carry one key.

Combination Padlock Option

If managing keys is not practical, such as where multiple staff, volunteers, or contractors require access, an outdoor combination padlock can be used instead. The Masterlock 1174D offers good outdoor performance and removes the need to keep track of keys entirely.
