How Can I Work Out Which Padlock Fits My Shipping Container?
We are often asked which padlock will fit a standard shipping container. While containers look similar, the fittings can vary significantly. The best place to start is by checking the hardware on your specific container.
If the container has not yet been delivered, speak to your supplier. They may be able to confirm the fitting measurements in advance.
Key measurements to take
Most container doors have a protective steel shroud covering the padlock area. To choose the correct padlock, you will need to measure:
-
Shroud depth – This determines how much space the padlock has behind the cover.
-
Fitting type behind the shroud – This may be a loop or bar and affects the shackle diameter and shackle clearance required.
-
Access space – Once the doors are closed, check whether you can physically position the padlock inside the shroud. Larger, high-security padlocks sometimes require more manoeuvring room.
Taking these measurements will allow you to select a padlock that fits securely and functions smoothly.
Choosing the right level of security
Your choice will depend on:
-
What you are storing inside the container
-
The location and exposure of the container
-
Any insurance security rating requirements
Our weatherproof and high-security padlock ranges include several suitable options.
Recommended container padlock options
Abus 92/80 Shutter Padlock
A hardened steel shutter padlock with a wide 37mm internal clearance. The shackle and keyway are positioned at the same end for easier access when working inside tight shrouds.
Abus Granit 37 Series (Removable Shackle)
The Granit 37/55 and 37RK/70 have completely removable shackles, making them ideal when space is limited. You place the shackle around the container fitting first, then re-attach the padlock body and lock it in place. This design does not reduce security performance.
Abus Granit Container Lock System
If your container does not have a built-in shroud, consider the Abus Granit Container Lock. This is a protective enclosure that bolts to the container door and includes a high-security Granit padlock. It provides a concealed shackle system without needing custom fabrication. It can also be used on warehouse doors, stables, vans and lorries.
