Can The Shackle Be Removed From A Granit Padlock?

Can The Shackle Be Removed From A Granit Padlock?

ABUS Granit padlocks are commonly used on shipping containers because of their high security and practical design. One key feature is that the shackle can be completely removed when the lock is open. This makes it easier to position the shackle inside a lock box or tight hasp arrangement before re-attaching the padlock body.

How The Shackle Is Secured

The Granit range uses a ball bearing locking mechanism. This means the shackle is held in place by two steel ball bearings when locked rather than a traditional spring-loaded latch. When unlocked, the shackle is retained by a small internal screw inside the lock body. Removing this screw allows the shackle to come free once the lock is open. This design does not reduce the security of the padlock when reassembled.

Tools Needed

  • 3mm hex key (Allen key)

  • Clean surface to place removed parts

Step-By-Step Shackle Removal

Step 1: Locate the retaining screw on the side of the padlock body.

Step 2: Use a 3mm hex key to turn the screw anti-clockwise.

Step 3: Fully remove the screw and set it aside safely.

Step 4: Unlock the padlock and lift the shackle out of the body.

Step 5: To reassemble, insert the shackle back into the lock body while unlocked, then replace and tighten the screw.

Why This Feature Is Useful

  • Easier to fit the shackle into enclosed lock boxes

  • More space to position the lock correctly on container hasps

  • Reduces the need to manoeuvre the full weight of the lock in a tight space

Security Considerations

Removing the shackle does not weaken the lock when correctly reassembled. The lock should always be checked after reassembly to ensure the shackle locks securely when closed. If using the padlock in a high-corrosion environment, apply a small drop of lubricant to the screw threads before reinstallation.

When To Use This Feature

  • Securing shipping containers

  • Fitting locks into recessed lock boxes

  • Situations with limited room to angle or rotate the lock body
