The Best Way to Secure a Motorbike with a Padlock and Chain

The Best Way to Secure a Motorbike with a Padlock and Chain

Securing a motorbike effectively means using multiple security measures rather than relying on a single lock. Combining disc locks, high security chains, quality padlocks and, where possible, a ground anchor, provides layered protection and makes theft significantly more difficult.

Use Your Steering Lock, But Don’t Rely on It

Most motorbikes are fitted with a steering lock as standard. While it should always be used, it can be broken with the right tools. On its own, it will not prevent a determined thief from wheeling the bike away.

Add a Disc Lock for Quick Everyday Protection

A disc lock prevents the wheel from rotating, making it difficult to roll the motorbike. The APC Motorcycle Disc Alarm Lock uses a 6mm pin that fits into the brake disc and includes a built-in alarm. It is suitable for short-term or indoor use, but works best when kept covered to protect the alarm mechanism from heavy rain exposure. A disc lock should be used alongside further security, rather than as the sole method.

Use a High Security Chain and Padlock

A chain and padlock setup provides strong physical resistance to theft. Abus hardened steel chains such as the Abus 8KS110 or Abus 10KS110 are available in multiple lengths and can be looped through the frame and rear wheel, then secured to an immovable object. When locking:

  • Keep the chain off the ground to prevent leverage attacks

  • Pass the chain through the frame, not just the wheel

  • Choose a strong, high security padlock (CEN rated where possible)

The Abus Granit range, including the new Abus 37ST/55 marine grade version, provides high resistance to cutting, sawing and lock manipulation while also offering corrosion protection.

Install a Ground Anchor for Home Storage

For maximum security when parked at home, a ground anchor adds a permanent fixing point. The Abus Ground Anchor is Sold Secure approved and designed to be fitted into concrete flooring or wall masonry. Once installed, use your high security chain and padlock to secure the motorbike to the anchor. This prevents the bike from being lifted or pushed away.
