Top 5 Love Lock Spots Around the World

Love padlocks are padlocks attached to bridges, gates, railings, fences or monuments as a symbol of commitment. Couples write or engrave their names on the padlock, lock it in place, and (traditionally) throw away the key as a sign of lasting love. Once one couple does it, others follow, and over time the site becomes covered in padlocks — a shared public display of affection.

1. Pont De L’Archevêché, Paris

Often referred to as the original “Love Bridge”, this spot sits behind Notre-Dame Cathedral. Visitors have locked hundreds of thousands of padlocks to the railings over the years. Although the city removed the locks in 2010, visitors quickly returned. Many couples even added new locks engraved with the date they first visited, making it not just a romantic tradition but also a repeat pilgrimage.

2. Namsan Tower, Seoul

Namsan Tower features Padlock Trees — metal frames completely covered in padlocks. The locks here are often more colourful and personalised, with messages, wishes and poems. Vendors even sell padlocks on-site for visitors. This location shows how love padlocks are not just symbols of romance, but also friendship, memory and hope.

3. Huangshan, China

Huangshan is a dramatic mountain landscape and UNESCO World Heritage site. Along the stone steps and railings, thousands of padlocks line the trails. Tradition says that once the padlock is secured, the key is thrown into the valley to “seal” the love forever. Today, visitors often keep or recycle their keys instead — still symbolic, but kinder to the environment.

4. Casa Di Giulietta, Verona, Italy

Associated with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this site draws visitors from around the world. Love letters, graffiti, and padlocks cover the entrance walls and archway. Space is scarce and finding a spot can be a challenge, but for many, placing a padlock here feels like connecting to one of literature’s most iconic love stories.

5. The Locks Fountain, Montevideo, Uruguay

Located on Avenida 18 de Julio, this fountain bears a plaque that reads: If a lock with the initials of two people in love is placed here, they will return together and their love will be forever locked. The fountain itself is modest, but the symbolism is strong — and unlike many other locations, the tradition feels intentional and built into the site.

Choosing A Padlock For A Love Lock Tradition

If you plan to place your own love padlock:

  • Pick a weatherproof or stainless steel padlock

  • Choose a size between 30–50mm for comfortable engraving

  • Use paint markers, engraving tools or custom engraving services

A well-chosen padlock will last years outdoors.
