Which Hasp & Staple is CEN Insurance-Rated?

Which Hasp & Staple is CEN Insurance-Rated?

This is a common question, and the short answer is that no hasp and staple fittings are CEN graded. The CEN grading system only applies to padlocks. This means that although your insurance company may request a "CEN rated hasp to match a CEN rated padlock", there is currently no official system that assigns CEN grades to hasps and staples. Instead, hasps must be chosen based on their construction, thickness, fixing method and compatibility with the shackle size of the padlock being used.

Why There Is No CEN Grade for Hasps

The testing standards used for CEN ratings involve force, cutting, twisting and attack testing specifically on padlocks. These tests cannot be applied consistently to hasps and staples because of the wide range of door types, fixing surfaces and installation methods. Because of this, manufacturers cannot label a hasp and staple as CEN rated in the same way as they can with padlocks.

How to Match a Hasp to a CEN Rated Padlock

Instead of looking for a CEN graded hasp, the aim is to match the hasp to the security level of the padlock. A hasp should:

  • Be made from hardened or heavy-gauge steel

  • Have minimal exposed metal that can be cut

  • Be securely fixed using coach bolts or security screws

  • Be compatible with the padlock shackle diameter

If the staple loop is too small for the padlock shackle, then even a secure padlock cannot be used effectively. This is often the limiting factor when choosing the right fitting.

Real Customer Example

A customer came to us with an insurance requirement stating:
"If external, the hasp must be used with a padlock conforming to BS EN 12320 Security Grade 5. If internal, it must be used with a padlock conforming to BS EN 12320 Security Grade 4. The hasp must be of similar strength to the padlock and secured with coach bolts."
The customer already owned a CEN 5 padlock with a 14mm shackle. However, many high-security hasps cannot take a shackle of this size because the staple opening is too narrow. In this case, the most suitable option was the Abus 125/150 hasp, which has a wide enough staple opening and a reinforced design suitable for heavy-duty external use.

Key Takeaway

There is no direct CEN rating for hasps and staples. Instead, choose a hasp built to a similar security standard and ensure the staple opening matches your padlock shackle size. Always fix using coach bolts to prevent the hasp being unscrewed or pried away.
