About this product

The world leading Granit padlocks are manufactured by ABUS in Germany. They are the only high security padlocks in the world to be cataphoretically coated to ensure they are a fully weatherproof to a marine grade standard and suitable for prolonged used outdoors and in a saline environment. ABUS have assured that these padlocks will be resistant to corrosion for 40+ years.

The large 77mm version affords an insurance approved CEN Grade 5 whilst the 63mm reaches CEN 4. Both use an ABUS Plus cylinder which boasts 250,000 key different variations and keys that cannot be copied at a traditional locksmith without your unique 'code-card'.

When unlocked the shackle can be removed completely and the key is retained within the padlock until the shackle is replaced.

Partially Restricted:
This lock is regarded as partially restricted. You get a code card with you lock and this is needed to get more copies made. However, it does require you to prove ownership nor is it legally protected. You would need a Fully Restricted padlocks for this.

Removable Shackle:
This padlock comes with the added benefit that the shackle can be removed from the body entirely. Out of the box the shackle is like any other padlock and retained inside the lock when in the open position. However, if you follow our tutorial you'll be able to convert the lock so that the shackle releases completely, allowing more room to maneuver the lock in tight spaces. Click here for shackle release tutorial.

All our padlocks are delivered with 2 keys each inclusive of the price including 1 LED power version.

ABUS Granit padlocks come with keys that cannot be copied by a standard lock smith or a key cutting machine. Your padlock will come with a special unique Code Card which you can use to purchase replacement keys in the future.

However, if you require additional keys you do need to purchase the keyed alike version of this padlock and then order the additional keys from that page. Please visit the Keyed Alike Section.

We have two sizes in this model. The 63mm which gets an insurance CEN Grade of 4 and the 77mm which reaches a huge CEN Grade 5 which is exceptional for an open shackle lock.

Uses & Applications:
Many insurance companies require padlocks which are of a CEN Grade of 4 or higher. The ABUS Granit range are all grade 4 or higher making them suitable for the highest security requirements.

ABUS 37 FrozenThis lock is also high resistant to cold temperatures. Although it is not 100% capable of withstanding ice, it will be much more reliable than a normal pin-tumbler padlock.

The ABUS Plus Cylinder is a disc cylinder whereby a stack of different discs is rotated when the key is turned. How far the key turns depends on the indentations in the key. If the discs are not correctly sequenced, a pin blocks the rotation of the cylinder and with it the opening of the lock. We have more information on the ABUS Plus cylinder here.

Please note that we have a dedicated section for all ABUS Padlocks in their range.

Here are some good images showing freeze testing and also the breakdown of the cylinder. What is noticeable is the lack of springs and moving parts. the mechanism is simple made from rotating disks, making it impossible to pick and highly resistant against weather and freezing.
