This type of padlock is designed to expose as little of the shackle as possible and therefore make it more difficult to attack with bolt-cutters and saws. Many insurance companies require you have a closed shackle. It is important to remember that both Discus and Shutter Padlocks are also classified as 'closed-shackle' since they're design automatically affords them this status.

This is actually a really common question and a very easy answer. All decent chains have one link that is longer at its end. You put one link through the other and then only a single link needs to attached to the actual padlock as per the photo below:

Yes it really is. Numerous tests have shown that closed shackle designed padlocks are much harder to remove than open shackle types. It purly comes down to how easy it is to get a saw or bolt cutter onto the shackle (loop). We even had a test in a magazine whereby a tiny ABUS diskus lock beat all the other bigger high security locks simply because the testing team couldn't get the bolt cutters onto it!

Many insurance companies ask that you use a closed shackle padlock. However, if you want to be totally sure, you may need to ask them what they define as "closed shackle". We would also call a discus (round padlock) and the square shutter padlocks as "closed shackle" since they work to shroud the shackle and make it difficult to cut.
