Locker Padlocks (Schools & Gyms)

Since we distribute to most of the schools and Universities in the UK we're in a good position to provide guidance on best practice and highlight the common pitfalls when choosing a padlock for a locker. All the padlocks below have been approved by us as suitable for lockers, but first, please bare in mind the advice in the FAQ's on this page. It is very important.

FAQs

Keyed Padlocks
If you want keyed padlocks then you MUST buy a high quality brand in this section. This is due to the high number of key repeats in a batch. We tend to advise that a padlock made by the German company ABUS should be used for lockers to ensure there are enough "differs" to negate the problem of key overlapping. Many schools have bought lower cost locks elsewhere and ended up having to replace all their locks with new ABUS types from us after problems with theft. Also note that ABUS locks from Screwfix are not suitable.

Combination Padlocks
If you decide to go for a combination padlock then once again you must choose a high quality type. Whilst all combination locks can be picked with a degree of skill, the lower cost versions are much more susceptible, especially in a school environment when children challenge each other. The locks we have listed in this section have all been tested to meet a minimum standard against this problem.

This means that you, the school or manager, will have a key that can override the padlock. We do both keyed and combination locks like this. You are clearly going to want to store the masterkey secure in a safe somewhere. If an unauthorised copy is made or one is lost you could have problems. This risk is something you may not want to deal with.

Note that the Shield Combination Padlocks can use the masterkey to open the lock or reset the code. This means it can be used to only open and inspect the locker or it can be used it the student has forgotten their code. You could also collect all the locks at the end of the year and reset / reissue them!

If you have lockers with something like this locking mechanism then you may have a problem. Some old cam latches like this will open even when a padlock is attached. This might mean you have to get the larger size of the padlock to work properly. If in doubt then reasd this article on the problem first.
