Insurance Rated Padlocks

Central European Norm (CEN) is a simple yet effective standard for padlock strength and ranges from 1-6. For high security purposes we forget grades 1 & 2. Grade 6 is the highest and really only needed in the most vulnerable commercial applications. Generally speaking grades 3-5 is adequate.

FAQs

It is likely you will be asked for one of the following by your insurance company:

1. You must have a 5 lever padlock
2. You must have a closed shackle padlock
3. You must have a CEN graded padlock of 3 or more
4. You must have a Sold Secure padlock

It is firstly important to understand that many insurance companies unfortunately have been misguided in terms of what specifications to ask for in a padlock. If in doubt then then simply go for a padlock which is CEN Rated to 3 or more and ideally ‘closed shackle‘ if you can. Still unsure? Read more here.

Very much so! All the insurance grading system base their tests on strength and this doesn't account for the shape or design of the lock. A padlock with protects the shackle from being cut easily, such as a "closed shackle" or "discus" design, will make it substantially more difficult to remove!

Broadly speaking CEN and BSEN are the same. CEN is European and BSEN is UK but they both have the identical grades from 1-6, with 6 being the highest. Sold Secure however is different and has Bronze, Silver and Gold. However, is a bit of a basic system which was initially invented for bicyle and motorcycle locks to make it easy for the general public to understand. Gold is clearly better than bronze and more expensive. Here is out rough guide:

CEN / BSEN 3 or Sold Secure Bronze

Garages, field / driveway gates, expensive bikes:
CEN / BSEN 4 or Sold Secure Silver

Warehouses, shutters, industry, containers, motorcycles:
CEN / BSEN 5 or Sold Secure Gold

Military, firearms, expensive motorcycles:
CEN / BSEN 6
