Lever Padlocks

Some insurance companies will require you to use a padlocks with 5 levers or more so here are a few options that will satisfy those.

Lever padlocks however are a little dated and if you go to an antique fair you'll see a lot of the old locks are using levers. In fact some of the padlocks on this page have changed very little from when they were first designed over 40 years ago. That said, what was strong then is still strong today and they remain very popular as a high security padlock.

Well it depends who you ask... If the insurance company asks for a "5 lever locks" then Yes they will. However, if they ask for a CEN grade or a BSEN Grade then No. Here is why:

The technology of a lever lock is very old and works like a traditional mortice lock. However, the design of traditional lever locks, like those made by the classic brands of Union, Chubb, ERA and Ingersoll, still remain strong and have proved themselves with the test of time.

One major issue is that some of the insurance grades require a minimum number of key variations and this is where the lever locks fall down. The mechanism simply can't produce that many key options. In the real world the amount key variations is only a small factor in security but if a padlock falls down on one of these factors, it will fail to get the insurance grade. Hence lever locks are rarely insurance rated.

Two reasons really. Lever locks are not so popular any more so supply and demand mean they are expensive to product in small numbers. Also the ones that are on the market are made by top names like ERA and Ingersoll and to a very high specification. This forces prices up.
